Addison Jane Foster has Arrived!

Two weeks ago today, the full moon shone brightly over Altamont Pass as Mike and I drove to the hospital in quiet anticipation of the day. This time around, we knew what to expect and were looking forward to a drama-free arrival of our newest addition to the family... and fortunately, that is just what we got.  Everything went according to plan, and Addison Jane Foster joined the world at 9:38 am!  The doctors immediately commented on two things - her perfectly round, beautiful head and the "impressive" knot Addison had tied in her umbilical cord while in utero.  The knot wasn't too tight to cause any alarm, but according to our delivery nurse, it was something "very special" to see.  (Mike actually was able to get a pretty cool picture of it... but I don't think most of you would like to see the rest of what was captured in the image.)  Addison weighed in at 7 lbs, 6 ozs and measured 19 inches long. She has a dimple on her right cheek, makes the sweetest expressions and has kept me smiling through my recovery.  We are truly blessed.

The full moon.

Waiting for my turn in the O.R.

My selfie for Andrew.  Gram said it made him laugh.
My first glimpse of you.

Over a pound smaller than her brother, but also 11 days earlier than him.
Mike would have preferred they round up her weight.

The one unfortunate thing that happened on Addison's Birth Day, had nothing to do with Addison and her arrival at all... it had to do with Andrew.  While I was being admitted, Mike was searching his phone and told me that based on his research, he thought Andrew needed to go to the doctor.  A couple days prior, Andrew had started crying during dinner and complaining that his tongue hurt.  We assumed he burnt it on the soup we were eating, but after Mike Googled... he began to think it was something else.  Well, Dr. Foster was correct.  Gram and Pop took Andrew to the doctor while I was in surgery (thank God for Gram, Pop and Aunt Amanda - more to come on their visit in a future post) - and he was diagnosed with Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease - a highly contagious and extremely uncomfortable condition.  So, my poor Andrew was restricted from visiting his newborn little sister in the hospital - something he had really been looking forward to.  Luckily, the doctors reassured us that Andrew would no longer be contagious by the time we planned to bring Addison home - otherwise, he may have had to be the Boy in the Bubble!  The below shot was during Andrew's first time seeing Addison - via FaceTime!  Ah, the wonders of technology.  Regardless, it was still a very special moment, and so far, Andrew has been a wonderful big brother.  He tells us to be gentle, and shows us gentle touches on her legs and (gasp) her head, he sings her songs, he wants to help with diaper changes, and he asks to hold her and cuddle with her and mommy.  I think our preparation has paid off!  He even comes home from school and says "I missed you Baby Addison".

The night before we left, we had a "Celebration Dinner" in the hospital.  Mike had a steak and I had some chicken dish that I didn't end up eating... but it was still a cute little meal.

This hospital did not do professional portraits like Abington did, so we did a mini photo shoot the morning of our departure.  I definitely need more practice still, but you can bet that I will get it over the next few months!  Enjoy!

Last "Pre-Baby Girl Foster" Baby Blog

This will probably be the last post I get to make before your arrival next week (assuming you stay put that long).  We cannot wait to meet you!

32 Weeks – This week, Gram, Pop and Andrew came with me to my checkup, so they could all hear your heart beat.  We had an abnormally long wait to see the doctor,  but I always think it is worth the wait to hear your little heart beating (Andrew may not have agreed... I’m not sure he really understood what he was listening to).  Dr. Salata also shared that we would schedule your delivery at my 36 week check up… UGH, so long to wait still!  While Gram was still here, she helped me finish your bed skirt that I had half finished (the light pink layer was mine, but it was see through, so Gram came up with a pretty solution to cover up the crib).  We need to make one or two adjustments when she comes back in January, but otherwise it's complete!  Other than washing and putting your clothes away, your room is all ready for your arrival now!

Andrew's old nursery, girl-ified.

Andrew's new room... in a previous post, I was going to show this all done.  It's been done forever. Sorry for the delay!

34 Weeks – You are the size of a cantaloupe this week and weigh just over 4 pounds!  While sitting in the doctor’s office this week, I had the sudden realization that you were coming in just 5 short weeks and was both excited and overwhelmed at the exact same time!  I feel like so much has to happen between now and when you come still, so this weekend I finally cut all the tags and washed your new clothes.

Your closet... cannot wait to dress you up!
I’ve been having a hard time sleeping most nights due to “restless leg”, and your poor father puts up with quite the bedtime routine from me.  It goes a little something like this: Every night, I put on a Breathe Right strip (because otherwise, I’ll wake up at 2am as congested as can be… your Dad tells me that I’ve been snoring anyway the past couple weeks), take out my thyroid pills, get a full glass of ice water, lay down with my pregnancy body pillow and pregnancy wedge (these are in addition to my normal 4 pillows I sleep with), then get almost immediate indigestion, so I sit back up, take two Tums, lay back down, get all settled, decide I should probably pee one more time before I fall asleep, get back up, go pee, lay back down, resituate my pillows, and proceed to lay there fidgeting with my legs for a minimum of 20 minutes before I finally fall asleep (I’ve also spent over an hour some nights waiting for this sensation to subside).  I sleep for roughly 2 hours before my first trip to the bathroom, and if I’m lucky, I can lay back down and fall right back asleep… but more often than not, the process repeats itself.  Lucky me.  Someday, you’ll be laying in bed awaiting your little ones arrival, and I hope you can read this and laugh and know what goes around comes around!  J

37 Weeks – Yay! Dr. Salata gave me the best birthday present – she wrote me out of work!  It was only two days earlier than planned, but who cares?  I’ll take what I can get!  That means, I’m officially on disability – which has not been easy to figure out.  The state of California has special laws for its residents who pay CA state tax (which I do), and it seemed like no one at Prudential could easily answer my questions for me... or didn’t want to because they were on holiday vacation.  I have finally found out the following:  I get 2 weeks paid pre-partum and 6 weeks paid post-partum from Pru.  Then I get 2 weeks paid post-partum from CA for having a c-section.  Then I get 2 weeks Paid Family Leave from Pru, then I get 6 weeks Paid Family leave from CA, then I get 18 weeks unpaid leave (if I want it).  Whew… did you get all that?  Basically, to sum up, I get some form of payment (not 100% that whole time) until mid-May, then can take 18 weeks unpaid after that, which is mid-September.
Us at 37 Weeks.

Two other exciting things that happened this week:
1) We picked up my must have gift (from Gram and Pop) - the Mama Roo!  This thing is AWESOME.  I hope you like it as much as I do!

Andrew thought pushing the buttons was REALLY fun.  We let Blue Bear and White Bear go for a ride... Andrew did want a turn, but seemed to understand that he was too big.  Hopefully, that understanding lasts!

2) My Diaper Genie arrived!  I say "My" because your father insists they're gross and won't use it... we'll see. We borrowed one for your brother, but in this big house - I just did not want to deal with lugging poopy diapers from upstairs every day.
My Diaper Genie!
38 Weeks – One week left… and I’m very conflicted.  Part of me is SOOOOO over being pregnant (okay, almost all of me is over it), but the other part of me needs you to stay put until Sunday when Gram and Pop get here. I am officially miserable… in addition to my complaints from week 34, I’ve had a cold for 3 weeks where I can’t breathe at all (regardless of my nasal strips, saline solution, or humidifier).  My mood is severely affected by this discomfort and lack of sleep, so I’m sure your father is ready for your arrival too… BUT, I’m nervous about going into labor before Gram and Pop arrive.  I just don’t think I can leave your brother at the neighbor’s in the middle of the night.  I won’t be able to relax and enjoy your arrival and our first moments together if I’m thinking Andrew is crying in a pack'n'play at the neighbors. So, please stay right where you’re at for at least 3 more days, and I promise I will try to keep the complaining to a dull roar.  I love you already and cannot wait to meet you... next week!  ;)

2013 Wrap Up

This year, due to my big belly, we stayed in CA for Christmas and had a quiet holiday - just the 3 and 3/4ths of us.  Although staying "home" can never beat going home, it did give us the opportunity to give Andrew a "real" Christmas - waking up in his own bed, running down his own stairs and seeing way more presents than we could have afforded if we flew all three of us back to PA. With that said... I can't wait to bring both my babies to PA next year for Christmas!
Waiting for Santa's arrival.
Like last year, we got a big box of ornaments in the mail from Grammy - 24 to be exact.  Twelve for Andrew and twelve for Mike and I... to represent the 12 days of Christmas.  Each night, leading up to Christmas, we would open our ornaments and find a spot on the tree.  Andrew especially loved being allowed to hang the ornaments, since we were more often than not telling him NOT to touch the tree the rest of the day.

"Cheese!"
That's better!
SANTA CAME!  This year, Andrew's big presents were a Work Bench, Easel, and about 20 trucks and tractors (we just couldn't help ourselves.)  He also got an elephant chair and stuffed elephant (one of which will be for his baby sister), a soccer ball (because Mike lost his over the fence and it was never returned), a set of wooden blocks (because both Mike and I had these as kids and it was a must for Andrew), a few books and a re-gifted Harley (we tried to give it to him at Easter, but his feet didn't reach the pedals - so it's been sitting in the shed ever since).  He did an excellent job at giving each gift a fair amount of play time before moving on, and the morning easily lasted from 7:00 to 11:30.

We were so impressed he knew exactly how to use this little electric drill!
This was our view much of the morning.  :)
Time to open stockings!  Bubble bath, a slinky, art supplies, a small tractor, and some yummy treats.
My very large belly!  Only 3 more weeks to go!

His feet reach!
He got 2 of these packages, plus another big tractor. from Santa.

The boy loves his trucks and tractors.

The Friday after Christmas, we headed into San Francisco for the night to meet up with Mike's Uncle Tim, Aunt Suzanne and cousin William. They had a layover on their way to Hawaii, so they decided to explore the city for the day and stay over night, and invited us in to join them for dinner. Since Grammy's flight came in early the next afternoon, we decided to stay over too and enjoyed a morning in the city before heading to the airport.  It was a very nice visit and Andrew loved playing with his cousin William.

Andrew loved our swanky hotel room!
This huge chair was in the lobby of the hotel.

Early Saturday morning, we waited in line to take a trolley down to Fisherman's Wharf.  Unfortunately, Andrew wasn't so sure of the whole thing because the man operating the car kept yelling at everyone to move here or there and wouldn't let Mike hold Andrew.  We'll try again when we have more time to wait for a better spot.

Checking out the Sea Lions!

Yet another ride on the carousel!  (Andrew chose the seal.)
We didn't bring a stroller, which was a big mistake - Andrew napped for over an hour on Mike's shoulder as we walked through the city.

A couple pictures from my birthday (no, I didn't take any of Mike's birthday... I'm horrible!).  I found these party hats from when I was a little girl... they're vintage!

Andrew had to blow out his own candle before he'd eat his cake.  Ugh.

And, finally, to wrap up 2013 - a couple shots from New Year's Eve.
We opened presents from Grammy, Mom-Mom and Uncle Dave - this new towel was from Mom-Mom and Andrew wasn't so sure at first, but used it tonight and looked so cute in it!

Grammy brought Christmas Crackers with her... they included party hats and whistles.

We celebrated with East Coast time so I could fall asleep at a reasonable hour.
Happy New Year!!
